A message from Shafiq Halim, Owner, Wm. FOX & Co.,
I am so sad to report that Craig L. Fox, 87, the former owner of Wm. Fox and my mentor, passed away peacefully on May 5, 2024 at his Arlington home. A lifelong resident of the DC area, Craig was born in Washington in 1937, to Ada Anderson Fox and Le Vern Fox. He lived most of his life in Alexandria.
“Lucky is the man who finds his calling,” and by that measure of a life, Craig was truly blessed. He seemed destined to be a haberdasher, and dedicated his life to the trade for more than fifty years. His interest in men’s clothing began as a teenager, working part time at Windsor Men’s Shop in Alexandria. Craig was voted “Best Dressed” by his classmates at George Washington High School. While attending George Washington University (class of 1960), Craig formed a friendship with his Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity brother William Frank, and together they established the fine men’s clothier, Wm. FOX & Co. in 1965. Craig assumed sole ownership 1975.
Craig was a soft-spoken, modest gentleman, who was beloved by his family and respected by so many of you, his loyal clientele, for his impeccable taste. He was a generous man, who had a unique sense of humor. He loved golf, gardening, listening to music — especially jazz and ‘70s soul. As small businesses gave way to shopping malls and corporate chains, men’s fashion became more casual, but Craig would not compromise. He kept classic, fine mens’ fashion alive and made Wm. Fox & Co. a DC institution. In 2020, he retired and sold the business to me. I have vowed to keep Craig’s legacy alive. Craig Fox is survived by daughter Laura (Sol Schott) and sons Billy, Ryan and significant-other, Cidette Perrin, former wives Lenora Rose and Judith Wennerberg.
On a personal note, I will forever be grateful to Craig. I so enjoyed working with him and learning from him. I will so miss my good friend.
